Why are Natterjack Toads so rare?

Natterjack Toads have declined significantly in last 100 years. This is mainly because of human influences such as land development leading to habitat loss. The species is now only found in coastal areas in Britain although they are still widespread in mainland Europe.

We have very few native species of reptile and amphibian so it is important that we protect what is left. Small populations of natterjacks still exist where they are clinging on in some coastal areas (as the map below shows). Many organisations are involved in captive breeding and reintroduction programs such as the Wildlife Trusts and Natural England. Before a re-introduction a site must be selected and assessed for compatibility and to get an idea of how many to release.
